- Coalition pledges $525m towards neglected aged-care sector 👵🏻👴🏻
But is it enough? Earlier this month, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety revealed the shocking tale of neglect towards Australia's older, more vulnerable citizens. After ten months of investigation and public hearings across the nation, the Royal Commission reported on its findings to date, which was ridden with scandals and overwhelmingly distressing experiences. One of the key controversies to emerge surrounded the Oakden aged-care facility in Adelaide, which closed in September 2017 after reports that patients had been overdosed and inappropriately restrained. Following a string of similar disturbing cases, the Interim Report shed light on the systemic failures of residential aged-care facilities and foreshadowed the likelihood of a complete overhaul in coming months. You can read the findings of the report titled Nelgect by clicking here. How has the Coalition responded? So far, the Federal Government has responded to the findings of the report by pledging $537 million to the aged-care sector. Of that amount, $25 million will be spent on medication management programs to reduce the use of chemical restraints to subdue and control the behaviour of residents. The majority of the funding will be devoted to an extra 10,000 home care packages, which some have criticised as a "drop in the ocean" of what's required from the government. According to Ian Henschke, Chief Advocate for National Seniors, up to 16,000 people died last year waiting for a home care package and over 120,000 remain on the waiting list. On that basis, one might argue that the Coalition is ignoring the bigger picture and applying a band-aid solution to the problem. However, this strategy is grounded in policy and recognises the importance of individuals having the autonomy to make their own choices about their future. It also remains to be seen what changes will be made with respect to the predominantly migrant-based workforce that is under pressure, under-valued and under-skilled to accommodate those in need. As identified in the Interim Report, "the quality of care that people receive depends very much on the quality of the paid carers, their working conditions, leadership and engagement," which is why further investigation into workforce issues will be carried out over the next 12 months. The final report is due on 12 November 2020 and will hopefully prompt more transparent, regulation amongst residential aged-care facilities. Until then, organisations within the sector are being urged to be proactive and follow best practice. How can Superior Lifestyle help? The decision to settle a loved one into an aged-care facility is a very uncomfortable exercise for most families and one which we believe should only be made as a last resort. When it comes to protecting our vulnerable senior population, we believe the answer lies in empowering them to be mobile and independent in their own homes through innovative assistive technology. With access to adjustable beds, lift recliner chairs and cyclonic vibration therapy, we can effectively reduce the strain on carers and simultaneously minimise pain and discomfort for a deep, restorative sleep. We have already begun taking steps to communicate the benefits of this technology with NDIS participants and will be taking a similar approach to key players in the aged care industry. - Deep Sleep: The third and final pillar to healthy living 💪🏻🧬
Quality sleep is often the missing component to a healthy lifestyle. Most doctors and sleep experts agree that 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night is necessary to function well during the day. Yet new research has shown that on average, Australians are getting only 6.5 hours of sleep a night. Up to 12% are clocking 5.5 hours or less. This is wholly deficient and has led to more than 7 million Australians suffering from a kind of permanent jet lag. As one can expect, poor sleep habits rob individuals of vital time for bodily repair and have a widespread impact: from loss of productivity to physical and mental health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, depression and much more. However, it is also impacting our community at large, with Deloitte Access Economics estimating a cost of $66 billion to the Australian economy. “Just like obesity, smoking, drinking too much and not exercising enough, sleep problems cause real harm in our community,” said Dr David Hillman (Director, Sleep Health Foundation) It comes as no surprise then that poor sleep is claiming the lives of 3000 Australians a year; a frightening but very real statistic from the Sleep Health Foundation. Source: (Asleep on the job: Costs of inadequate sleep in Australia, Sleep Health Foundation, 2017) What can I do? As we mature, getting a deep-rested sleep become less of a priority which often contributes to the common misconception that poor sleep is simply a fact of life in old age. This is simply not true, and we take pride in educating Australians on how they can achieve a better quality of life without over-the-counter prescriptions or surgery that might cost you an arm and a leg. The simple and less invasive solution is a Superior Lifestyle adjustable massage bed complete with a memory foam, pressure-relieving mattress. It’s also important to remember that just because we’re getting the right quantity of sleep, doesn’t always mean we’re getting the best quality of sleep. Finding the ideal bed and mattress for your needs – and those of your significant other – could significantly improve your quality of sleep and make your waking hours happier, healthier and even more productive. With over 1000 positions to explore, the Superior Lifestyle adjustable bed is the perfect solution to creating the optimal conditions and environment for effective sleep performance. - How snoring poses a serious threat to your health 💤😴
Have you ever wondered why as you get older, your snoring tends to get worse? And no, it’s not just your imagination! Although snoring can occur at any age, getting older often contributes to its intensity as the body matures and experiences weight gain, decreased muscle mass and other external influences (such as alcohol). While your own snoring is unlikely to bother you, sleeping next to someone who does can feel like the ground is shaking, costing you valuable sleeping time for recovery. In fact, according to Dr Steven Park: “It is estimated that by age 60, 60% of men and 40% of women snore. About 35% of habitual snorers are found to have obstructive sleep apnea. Therefore, a person who is over 60 and snores has a one in five chance that they may have obstructive sleep apnea.” If this is any indication, snoring is a widespread problem and poses a serious threat to the health and wellbeing of millions. The more serious cases of obstructive sleep apnea have been found to accelerate a loss in cognitive ability, particularly when left untreated. What can I do about it? If you are a habitual snorer, you will have discovered by now that over-the-counter medication is ineffective, and that surgery will cost you an arm and a leg. But there is a simple alternative and less invasive solution: a Superior Adjustable Bed. You see, sleeping flat on your back is a common factor in sleep disordered breathing as it encourages the muscles and other tissues in your diaphragm to relax and therefore impede a steady airflow. This is often overlooked, and yet our adjustable beds have proven for over 11 years to be a cost-effective option for minimising light to heavy snoring. With over 1000 positions to explore, our adjustable beds can help you find the perfect elevated position for inducing sleep and eliminating snoring. By raising the head above the lungs, there is a downward gravitational pull on your lower jaw, providing more open space for unobstructed airflow. Additionally, a Superior Adjustable Bed allows for even body weight distribution which is difficult to achieve on a flat bed without additional pillows or other temporary make-shift solutions. In effect, our adjustable beds can be used to create the optimal conditions for deep sleep, with full body support and relaxation to effectively minimise sleep-disordered breathing. Our adjustable beds is also available in a dual mattress and sleep system, allowing couples with different health conditions and needs to select their own individual preferences. How can we help? If you're concerned about your sleep performance, call us today and speak with one of our friendly Sleep Specialists. Our adjustable beds have helped thousands of Australians get the most rested night's sleep that they deserve and our dedicated customer care team are standing by to help you in any way that they can. - Top 3 Sleep Myths Debunked! 🤔🤓
Healthy deep sleep isn't just essential for “beauty rest”, it also aids in revitalising the brain and major organs of the body so that they can function as intended. Sleep deprivation can affect your decision-making, memory, performance, safety and mood. So ask yourself, are you getting enough sleep? The truth is not many people are and in this article, we will debunk some of the most common sleep myths. 1. "I can just snooze more on the weekends to make up for inadequate sleep during the week" This approach can only help in relieving a fraction of a sleep deficit. It will never make up for a lack of hours during weeknights. In fact, it can negatively affect your sleep-wake cycle and you will certainly find it more difficult getting up early on Monday mornings. In other words, if your sleep performance is poor during the week, you will still wake up feeling tired and fatigued on weekends. 2. "Lacking one hour of sleep each night doesn't affect me during the day" Some people may believe that an hour's sleep less each night is insignificant. However, the medical research in this field begs to differ. You may not feel sleepy during the day, especially if you're drinking one or two coffees, but even the slightest cutback in your hours of sleep can impinge on your ability to think clearly and react quickly. In the long run, sleep deprivation of any proportion compromises your energy balance, cardiovascular health and immune system. You will notice a severe impact on your circadian rhythms (i.e. the physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a daily cycle) which can lead to serious mishaps like sending the wrong email to a client, being late to meetings or God forbid, a road accident. 3. "I can fall asleep anywhere. My body easily adjusts to changes in my sleep cycle" If you are somebody who can fall asleep almost anywhere, you might consider yourself lucky. However, that isn't necessarily a good thing. In most circumstances, you will only be in a light stage of sleep, which does not provide the sort of replenishment your body and brain requires. At the very least, you need the right conditions and environment for sustaining a deep level of sleep where your body can secrete the growth hormone, which is associated with cellular rebuilding and repair. How can we help? Adjustable massage beds (or electric beds) are a vital component in creating the perfect conditions for a blissful night's sleep. If you're concerned about your sleep performance, call 1200 825 931 to speak with one of our experienced Sleep Specialists. Our adjustable beds have helped thousands of Australians get the most rested night's sleep that they deserve and our dedicated customer care team are standing by to help you in any way that they can. - Can our adjustable beds help solve sleep apnea? 💤
Recent study confirms snoring and sleep apnea are hereditary 😴 For the first time, a new study by QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute has identified more than 170 genes behind disrupted breathing during sleep. Led by Dr Miguel Renteria, the research builds on a common assumption that snoring and sleep apnea are hereditary conditions. Up until now, this has largely been ignored in favour of other lifestyle risk factors such as age, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption. "This is the first study which investigates on a large scale the genetic basis for the predisposition to snoring," said Dr Miguel Renteria. Notably, many of the genes identified have previously been linked with respiratory, cardio-metabolic, neurological and psychiatric traits. The findings were drawn from the DNA profiles of roughly 150,000 snorers and more than 250,000 individuals who do not suffer with any respiratory difficulties during sleep. The full study has been published in the journal Nature Communications. It is entirely possible that from generations of sleeping on a flat bed, we are now witnessing the effects of gravity on our biological evolution. At Superior Lifestyle, we are deeply passionate about our electric beds which are designed to alleviate symptoms associated with common health issues such as sleep apnea. But before we discuss how, it's worth understanding this issue in more detail. What is sleep apnea? Sleep apnea is the repeated obstruction of the upper airway during sleep and ranges from mild to severe cases. It occurs where a person's tongue or airway muscles relax causing a partial or complete blockage of airflow. A patient with sleep apnea can stop breathing for up to 90 seconds before their brain registers a drop in oxygen levels and sends a small wake-up call. This will prompt the person to gasp, snort, toss and turn or wake up from their slumber. In most cases, it is a subconcious reaction and the person is completely oblivious to their condition. This is terrifying when you consider the fact that victims of sleep apnea are exposed to a heightened risk of mortality, type-2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. It also increases the chances of being involved in a motor vehicle or workplace accident due to poor concentration, fatigue and mood swings. The condition is perhaps more common than we think, affecting over 775,000 Australians and many more that are unaccounted for. According to Deloitte Access Economics, this costs our economy approximately $5.1 billion each year comprising of healthcare costs and productivity losses. So what treatment is available? Over the years, there have been a variety of inventions from mouth guards to invasive CPAP machines and other wearables that purport to improve a person's quality of sleep. Besides being extremely uncomfortable and in the case of surgery quite expensive, these devices do not guarantee any success and are often abandoned by their user. The truth is no single treatment will work for everyone and as always, it is worth consulting with your doctor before making a decision. However, there is one solution that is often left out of the conversation despite its efficacy. For many people who live each day with the foggy-headed side effects of sleep apnea, our adjustable beds have helped them get a well rested night and improve their quality of life. How can we help? If you're experiencing broken sleep or waking up feeling drowsy and lethargic, you are likely to find some relief in one of our adjustable beds and pressure relieving memory foam mattresses. Don't just hear it from us, hear it from one of our long-standing clients, Rozanne Oliff (above). Shortly after purchasing her adjustable bed, Rozanne was able to banish her sleep apnea machine and increase her sleep performance drastically. - More Aussies turning to drugs to fall asleep
As the world grapples with the unprecedented impact of COVID-19, doctors and pharmacists are beginning to notice a worrying trend that could lead to a further loss of life. With many forced to stay home and endure the stress of mounting bills with a loss of income, prescriptions for anti-anxiety medication and sleeping pills have risen, prompting the need for caution around the abuse of drugs. In this blog post, we take a closer look at the stressors prompting an uptake in drugs and alcohol, and offer some healthier alternatives to managing stress and insomnia. Understanding the human mind Our bodies and minds have come a long way since the age of the caveman. From hunting for food and fighting with bears, to avoiding conversations and constantly comparing ourselves to others, the human mind has evolved to accommodate the sheer pace and complexity of modern life. As Dr. Russ Harris explains, our very existence has been intensified by this idea of a "never-ending to do list", making it extremely difficult to stop every once in a while and smell the roses. Coupled with the uncertainty and distress of the global pandemic and an economic downturn, it is no surprise that more and more Australians are turning to drugs to help switch off. “We know anecdotally in our community that people are hoarding prescription medicines...” said Leone Crayden, Chief Executive of The Buttery Rehabilitation Centre in Byron Bay, New South Wales. "It’s early days yet, but this is what is happening and I just hope governments are aware of it." Drugs aren't the only substance being abused either. According to a recent survey by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, a third of Australians are buying alcohol daily and approximately seventy per cent are consuming more alcohol than normal. The link between stress and substance abuse has been well established for many years, but insufficient awareness and action has led to an increasing number of deaths in Australia each year. Playing with fire It would be easy to presume that a drug or alcohol overdose would not happen to you, but the hard truth is that it can happen to anyone; from hoodlums and outcasts to conservatives and white-collar professionals. Last year, a report commissioned by public health organisation, the Penington Institute, revealed an alarming fourty per cent increase in the number of Australians dying from accidental drug overdose. The report goes on to say that sleep and anxiety pills are the second most common group found in accidential overdoses and that the subsequent number of deaths has doubled since 2008. "It's time to call this what it is: Australia's very own overdose crisis," said John Ryan, CEO of the Penington Instiute. "Make no mistake, it's a crisis that's getting worse." Australians are also being put on notice for their excessive alcohol consumption. In fact, a study of almost 80 years of health records, reveals that slashing our weekly intake of alcohol by five standard drinks could reduce the cancer death rate by 12% over 20 years. That equates to roughly 5,500 people a year! If this is any indication, Australians are seriously underestimating the danger of substance abuse and are urged to consider healthier alternatives for managing stress and sleep deprivation. Tips for managing insomnia and anxiety There are a variety of things we can do to curtail our dependency on drugs and alcohol, starting with a few lifestyle changes. According to clinical neurophsyiologist and sleep medicine specialist, Minesh Morker, poor sleep hygiene is extremely common for victims of insomnia and anxiety, but can be easily addressed. Simply turning off our mobile devices an hour or two before bed time, can make a significant difference as it encourages the production of melatonin (the hormone that aids sleep). Similarly, regular exercise during the day has proven to enhance our sleep quality on a level comparable to therapy and medication. It's also important to monitor your daily intake of sugar and saturated fats. A diet with high fibre is often recommended for victims of insomnia and may make all the difference to your quality of life. In many cases, the safest and most effective way to treat insomnia and anxiety will involve a combination of different therapies. How can we help? - Helping vicitims of the QLD and NSW bushfires
"We have recognised an opportunity to help those who have lost everything to the bushfires and leading up to Christmas, it's important we come together," says Belinda Sidhu (Managing Director). When news broke at the beginning of summer that rural areas of Queensland and New South Wales were on fire, we were caught off guard. We did not anticipate the level of destruction that would ensue so quickly after the winter months. Since November, the Rural Fire Service has reported that over 2.7 million hectares of land have been burnt and more than 724 homes have been lost by 'unprecedented' bushfire conditions. However, according to Greg Mullins (former Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner) the worst is yet to come as the country faces hotter temperatures and drier conditions, with no significant rain forecasted. "[The fires] are going to get bigger and they are going to come into Sydney suburbs, the South Coast, the Central Coast," warns Greg Mullins. With this in mind, Superior Lifestyle called an executive meeting on Friday, 13 December to identify ways it could deliver on its corporate social responsibility. As a family-run business, Superior Lifestyle prides itself on being an advocate for community and believes it has a strong role to play in helping families get back on their feet. "In the spirit of Christmas, we want to give back and we have recognised two ways that we can contribute effectively during this national crisis," says Belinda Sidhu. 1. Raising funds We are pleased to announce that in February 2020, we will be donating a portion of our proceeds to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. This organisation is crucial to social cohesion and has been selected as the recipient for donations due to their active role in managing the impact of the bushfires. We will announce the amount of funds raised at the end of February, so be sure to subscribe to our newsletter for updates. 2. Donating beds and mattresses We have also appointed a dedicated Community Enagegment Officer to source and identify families displaced by the bushfires and in need of beds and mattresses. Over the next three months, we will be gathering beds and mattresses suitable for donation from our customers, display shows and discontinued stock. These items will be dispatched to charities and individuals across the East Coast. If you want to get involved or contribute to this initiative, please give us a call on 1300 825 931. Alternatively, you can email us at info@superiorlifestyle.com.au. Together, we can make a difference.

From electric beds and pressure-relieving mattresses to massage chairs and cyclonic vibration therapy, all of our products offer a variety of health benefits and are Class 1A Medical Devices, listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (307512). Donna Joseph from Gordon Park, Queensland, obtained her electric bed through the NDIS and recently shared her experience with us below: "I have suffered for a very long time with back, body and leg pains from osteoarthritis, joint pain, headaches and restless legs. Sometimes I would wake up crying in the middle of the night from so much pain and have to sleep with pillows under my legs and my head just to get some kind of relief. Since having this wonderful, comfortable bed, it's been like sleeping on a cloud. With the massage vibration, I generally fall asleep once my head hits the pillow. I am no longer waking up in the middle of the night and I've been getting up in the mornings less cranky because I've slept like a baby. I highly recommend this company and this therapeutic bed to anyone in need of deep sleep!" - Victims of the Australian bushfires receive donated beds
In our last blog post, we pledged to help families get back on their feet following the devastating bushfires affecting the nation. As news broke this morning of the 72 homes lost to unforgiving bushfires, we were able to secure the first recipients of our bed and mattress donation drive. Carmen Walsh and her six grandchildren (pictured below) lost their home in Central Queensland to bushfires earlier this month. Carmen was first brought to our attention through Red Cross Australia and GIVIT (a national not-for-profit organisation that connects people in need with willing donors). Shortly, we will dispatch a total of seven beds and mattresses to support Carmen and her family during this difficult time. Stay tuned for more updates on our efforts to mitigate the impact of the #AustralianBushfires around the country. If you know somebody affected by the bushfires and in need of a bed, please don't hesitate to contact us on info@superiorlifestyle.com.au. Update: Our donated beds and mattresses left our depot on 14 January 2020 and were received shortly thereafter. In a candid testimonial, Ross describes his remorse and regret after cancelling his order with Superior Lifestyle, on the promise of a "free 30 day trial" with TV Shop. In hindsight, Ross can't be blamed. He didn't even get a chance to read the fine print before he was bound to his purchase. The innocent victim? Ross's wife Yvonne, who at 152cm tall, found herself trapped between the encatchment that outrageously appeared when elevating their TV Shop bed. When the couple sought to return the bed, they were forced to jump through numerous hoops and slapped with exorbitant fees that left them out of pocket by almost $2,000. Within a matter of days, Ross was on the phone with us asking for our help to return his purchase. We were more than happy to assist Ross and his wife, who have kindly shared their experience during this ordeal in the letter below. This review serves as an important reminder to players in the market for an adjustable bed. For the very best in comfort, quality and customer care, choose Superior Lifestyle. Ross and Yvonne Stuart 402/42 Queen Street Kings Beach QLD 4551 To Whom It May Concern: My name is Ross Stuart and I am writing to express my experience with Superior Lifestyle. I was initially invited by Superior Lifestyle to an in-home consultation on how to stay mobile and independent in your own home. We were greeted by a lovely gentleman named Greg Hyslop and expressed an interest in the products because my wife, Yvonne, suffers with osteo-arthritis and I suffer from mild to acute pain in my lower back and neck. The way the technology works is something I had never seen before. The device generates a cyclonic motion to deeply sooth and relieve muscle tension, and is significantly more comforting than most traditional massagers. Almost immediately after the demonstration, Yvonne was walking with less pain in her shoulders and knees. Being older in age, we decided to invest in an electric massage bed, which is where we spend a lot of our time. Shortly after our visit from Greg, we came across a TV advertisement offering a similar sort of electric bed with a “Free 30 Day Trial”. We foolishly cancelled our order with Superior Lifestyle and placed an order with TV Shop, on the basis of the “free trial”. Needless to say, we regretted our decision as the bed that was delivered was incredibly poor in design and quality. To give you an example, Yvonne (being less than 152cm tall) found herself trapped in the bed whenever the head and legs were elevated, meaning there was no practical benefit or support from these features. The massage vibration was also quite aggressive and therefore unlikely to be used. We invited Greg Hyslop to come and inspect the purchase we had made and were delighted to hear that Superior Lifestyle would assist us in returning the bed to TV Shop. You see, the Free 30 Day Trial advertised on TV is not exactly “free”. After being palmed off from one company representative to the next, we were forced to pay for the cost of delivery, the cost of returning the bed and a further cancellation fee. It pays to read the fine print as with most things in life you can never be too careful… but in this instance, we weren’t given a fair or proper chance to read the terms and conditions! We were left out of pocket with our purchase from TV Shop, but I am pleased to say that our experience with Superior Lifestyle has been wonderful and the quality of their beds are next to none. The difference between the two companies are like chalk and cheese with Superior Lifestyle offering an electric bed of hospital standard. Every step of the way, Superior Lifestyle were professional, diligent and committed to helping us achieve a better quality of life through deep sleep. I would recommend Superior Lifestyle to anybody in the market for an adjustable bed and caution you against those companies out there looking to make a quick buck! Yours sincerely, Ross and Yvonne Stuart
